Belt Sizing Guide

Finding your correct belt size is simple — but it's different from your pant size. This guide walks you through two easy methods so your Saddlebelt fits perfectly from day one.

Quick Rule: Your belt size = your pant waist size + 2 inches. If you wear a size 32 pant, order a size 34 belt. When in between sizes, always size up.

Method 1: Measure Your Current Belt

This is the most accurate method. Use a belt you already wear comfortably.

How to Measure

  1. Lay your belt flat on a table.
  2. Measure from the base of the buckle prong (where the leather begins at the buckle end) to the hole you use most often.
  3. Do not include the buckle itself in the measurement — only the leather strap.
  4. This measurement in inches is your Saddlebelt size.
  5. If your measurement falls between two whole numbers (e.g. 33.5"), round up to the next size (34").

Method 2: Use Your Jeans Waist Size

Don't have a belt handy? Use a pair of well-fitting jeans and add 2 inches to the labeled waist size.

How It Works

  1. Check the waist size label inside your jeans (the number printed on the tag).
  2. Add 2 inches to that number.
  3. That is your Saddlebelt size.

Example: Jeans labeled 34" waist → order a size 36 belt.

Tips for the Best Fit

  • Always measure in inches. Our belts are sized in inches, which is the standard for US belt sizing.
  • When in doubt, size up. A belt that's slightly long can be trimmed; one that's too short can't be extended.
  • The middle hole is your target. A well-fitted belt should buckle at the center hole, leaving two holes on either side for adjustment.
  • Vegetable-tanned leather will soften slightly over time. Full-grain leather has minimal stretch, so your measured size stays accurate long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pant size varies between brands — which size do I use?

Use Method 1 (measuring your current belt) for the most reliable result. If you don't have a belt, measure your actual waist where the belt sits using a soft tape measure, then add 2 inches.

What if I'm exactly between two sizes?

Always size up. For example, if your measurement is 33.5", choose the 34" belt.

Can I trim my Saddlebelt if it's too long?

Yes. Full-grain leather can be trimmed from the tip end with a sharp leather knife or taken to a local cobbler. We recommend trimming no more than 2–3 inches from the tip to preserve the taper shape.

Is belt size the same as pant size?

No. Pant size is a label set by the clothing brand, while belt size is a direct measurement of length. Because pant sizing varies between brands, your belt size is usually 2 inches larger than your labeled pant size, not the same number.

Should my belt size be bigger than my pant size, or the same?

Bigger. Belts are measured from the buckle to the hole, not around your waist, so they need extra length to buckle comfortably. As a rule, add 2 inches to your pant size — a 34" pant typically takes a 36" belt.

Will a leather belt stretch after I start wearing it?

Vegetable-tanned full-grain leather softens with wear but doesn't stretch out of shape the way bonded or synthetic leather can. Your measured size will stay accurate for years of regular use.

How can I find my belt size without a tape measure?

Wrap a piece of string or a ribbon around your waist where you'd wear the belt, mark where it overlaps, then measure that length against a ruler. Add 2 inches to get your Saddlebelt size.

Do men's and women's belts use the same sizing method?

Yes. Belt sizing is based on length in inches for both, not gendered sizing. The only difference is where the belt is typically worn — at the natural waist for most men's styles, sometimes higher or lower for women's styles — so measure at the position you'll actually wear it.
